Daħlet Qorrot

Bajja ta' Daħlet Qorrot

A stretch of coast path east of the bay at Daħlet Qorrot, on Gozo's north-east coast. The official walk sheet calls the bay a popular fishing and swimming site for locals and tourists.

Why practise here

From map data the sun rises over open sea on every sunrise bearing here, though no source confirms this on the ground. The official sheet describes a coastal limestone shelf, with garrigue beside the path on map data. In the hunting months dawn falls within hunting hours, and the sheet advises walking in broad daylight, so a sunrise session is better kept for outside the season.

Getting there

Start: In-Nadur village square, on the official circular Daħlet Qorrot Walk of 10 km in all.

The walk: Moderate for the whole walk, with some steep inclines and a few rocky areas..

Surface: Roads and paths, with steps with railings up to a limestone cliff top east of the bay.

Transport: Buses reach In-Nadur. Map data shows a road running to the bay.

Directions

What to watch for

  • Cliff edges, and the official sheet says to walk in broad daylight.
  • Rocky areas and steep inclines on the route.
  • Transport Malta warns that rockfall can happen anywhere near cliffs or overhangs. Stay back from edges and out from under overhangs.
  • The official sheet says bird trapping and shooting are practised in the countryside.
  • Hunting may take place here in season: usually 1 September to 31 January on land, plus any spring season declared for the year.
  • Rabbit shooting can add gun use from June to December.
  • In the autumn season, hunting hours start two hours before sunrise. They end two hours after sunset from Monday to Saturday (7pm from 15 September to 7 October), and at 1pm on Sundays and public holidays.
  • GOV.UK says hunting areas are rarely marked and may overlap with public walkways.

Hunting may be legal around here in season, so mid-morning can be a better choice than dawn from September to January. More on staying safe.

Rules

  • Stick to the set route. The official sheet says fields marked RTO are private and out of bounds.
  • Do not climb rubble walls or collect plants, and avoid cliff edges.
  • The official sheet gives October to May as the season for this walk.
  • Set any mat well back from the cliff edge.
  • ERA's 2022 rules name this part of the Gozo coast among places outside protected sites where organised events need notification. Those rules appear to be superseded but are still online, so contact ERA ([email protected]) before running a class.

Map data shows no Natura 2000 site at this point. The official route runs here, and the sheet says many fields on the route are privately owned.
