Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park

Xrobb l-Għaġin

A nature park of over 155,000 square metres on the south-east coast, run by Nature Trust - FEE Malta, with walking routes and information boards. The site also has a hostel and a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, and the operator lists daily school outings.

Why practise here

The coast here faces east, and from map data the sunrise bearings run over open sea. Opening hours may rule out sunrise itself: a 2023 report gives 8am to 5pm, so plan on morning light unless the park confirms otherwise. This point is on a path about 94 metres from the coast on map data, away from the temple remains.

Getting there

Start: The park car park at the entrance, or on foot or by bicycle from Marsaxlokk, Żejtun, or Marsascala and St Thomas Bay.

Surface: Rocky terrain according to one guide. Map data shows an earth path at this point.

Transport: Visit Malta says those three starting points are served by public transport.

Directions

What to watch for

  • Eroding cliffs: one guide calls them highly prone to erosion.
  • Transport Malta warns that rockfall can happen anywhere near cliffs or overhangs. Stay back from edges and out from under overhangs.
  • Strong sun.
  • Hunting may take place here in season: usually 1 September to 31 January on land, plus any spring season declared for the year.
  • Rabbit shooting can add gun use from June to December.
  • In the autumn season, hunting hours start two hours before sunrise. They end two hours after sunset from Monday to Saturday (7pm from 15 September to 7 October), and at 1pm on Sundays and public holidays.

Hunting may be legal around here in season, so mid-morning can be a better choice than dawn from September to January. More on staying safe.

Rules

  • A 2023 report gives opening hours of 8am to 5pm daily. Another guide says daylight hours, so confirm on +356 2131 3150.
  • One guide says to keep dogs on a leash and stay on marked paths.
  • Do not use the temple site, which Visit Malta says is largely lost to erosion and not recommended for viewing.
  • Keep out of a track marked private on map data.
  • Set any mat well back from the cliff edge.
  • We found no published rule on groups, so ask Nature Trust before organising a class.
