Why practise here

From map data the sea is open to the west, so the sun sets over the water all year, and the park suggests sunset walks in the hot months. The park's regulation sets hunting hours ending at 12.30pm at the latest and trapping at 2.30pm, so an evening session falls after them. There is no shade and the ground is rock, and any mat should sit well back from the cliff, which is mapped 20 metres from the viewpoint.

Getting there

Start: Golden Bay car park. Distance is one way along the path network, from map data.

The walk: 1.87 km.

Surface: Mostly rock path, from map data, with short track, asphalt and dirt sections. One route note calls the terrain rugged but manageable and advises sturdy shoes.

Transport: Bus stop Għajn Tuffieħa - Tuffieħa is about 100 metres from the car park, from map data. We haven't confirmed the route numbers, so check the Journey Planner.

Directions

What to watch for

  • Cliff edge: map data shows a cliff 20 metres from the viewpoint. One walk guide warns of cliffs, especially with children.
  • Transport Malta warns that rockfall can happen anywhere near cliffs or overhangs. Stay back from edges and out from under overhangs.
  • The park regulation gives hunting hours to 12.30pm from September to November and in spring, and to 10am in December and January, on Wednesdays and on public holidays. Trapping runs to 2.30pm.
  • The autumn hunting season on land usually runs from 1 September to 31 January.
  • No shade, so carry water.
  • Allow enough daylight for the walk back after sunset.

Hunting may be legal around here in season, so mid-morning can be a better choice than dawn from September to January. More on staying safe.

Rules

  • Free on foot and open all year.
  • No vehicles, no camping, and no open fires or barbecues.
  • The park regulation says organised activity of more than 20 people, commercial or not, needs a permit from the Park Manager, other than walking and cycling on designated footpaths.
  • The regulation also bars temporary installations for organised activities without a permit. A park permit does not replace other permits.
  • Contact ERA ([email protected]) before running any organised or paid class here, because this is a Natura 2000 site. Do not assume small groups are exempt.
  • ERA's current page asks for at least one month's notice for groups under 50 and an environmental permit for 50 or more. Its published figures vary, so confirm with ERA.
  • Set any mat well back from the cliff edge.

What we haven't confirmed

  • We haven't confirmed flat ground for a mat here, back from the edge.
  • One walk site rates a 7 km park loop as easy, but we haven't confirmed that it passes this headland, and we have no walking time for this leg.
  • We haven't confirmed how well the way to this point is signed.
  • We haven't confirmed whether Yelkouan shearwaters nest near this point. BirdLife Malta asks people to avoid bright lights and loud music near nesting sites.
  • We haven't confirmed phone signal or sea swell here.
